Silk Exports Unexploited Potential

INDIA'S silk exports have shown an en-couraging trend during the Sixth Plan period and the export earnings of the industry in 1984-85 (the terminal year of the Sixth Plan) had amounted to Rs 129 crore against the Plan target of Rs 100 crore. In 1985-86, the first year of the Seventh Plan export earn-ings from silk and silk goods have registered an impressive increase of 23.8 per cent to Rs 159.21 crore. Going by the trend, it should not be difficult for the industry to surpass the Seventh Plan target of Rs 190 crore by a substantial margin.
