February 16, 1985 South Korea Long Way to Democracy THE results of the national assembly elections in South Korea on February 12 have exposed as fraudulent the claim of the military-backed regime of Chun Doo Hwan that there is wide support for the regime's efforts to 'ensure political stability', a euphemism for its authoritarian rule. The results must have come as a surprise even to the major opposition party, the New Korea Democractic Party (NKDP) which, according to its own calculations before the election, did not expect to win more than 30 seats. It had viewed participation in the election as part of the struggle against the regime and for restoration of democracy.
