From Our Correspondents Ahmedabad Nationalisation TLA and Textile Workers

SINCE July 1984 by when 17 mills in Ahmedabad had closed down displacing more than 35,000 permanent workers in the textile industry, rumour; of the impending nationalisation of the mills had been cir-culating in the city. These rumours were given credence when Ahmedabad news-papers leaked out a story that the govern-ment of Gujarat was negotiating with the Textile Labour Association (TLA) an agree-ment which included scrapping of unviable units and displacing of one-half of the workers, this proposed agreement created a rift in the leadership of the TLA with Arvind Buch, the president, wishing to sigh the agreement and the rest of the three secretaries led by Navinchandra Barot declining to sign it
