Pharmaceuticals Hathi Report: A Decade After OVER a decade ago the Hathi Committee on Drugs and Pharmaceuticals tabled its 275-page report which sparked off a debate which is still being heard. It was a landmark report which for the first time took a close look at the industry and found, among other things, an overfed and rapidly growing multinational sector which was stifling the growth of the industry along appropriate lines. It recommended radical measures to curb the multinational sector and redirect the industry towards producing necessary, quality drugs at reasonable prices. After three years of sharp debate, the government of India adopted a thoroughly diluted ver- ion of the Hathi report as the Drug Policy of 1978. Today when the government is in be final stages of formulating a new drug policy, the Hathi recommendations and the ega of their passage through the govern- rent need a closer look.
