A Plea for Rational Growth Vishwapriya L Iyengar OVER half a decade of intense struggle by traditional fisherpeople in Kerala in defence of their livelihood and in protest against the acute depletion of marine fish resources has been met with colossal indifference. The government appears to have relinquished even cursory management of human resources and marine wealth. The resultant chaos has enriched a few at the cost of near- permanent damage to the marine ecology and has thrown lakhs of fisherpeople into hard and sudden poverty. All this has been but a culmination of the policy of marine fisheries development initiated in the mid-fifties.
