November 2, 1985 to 2.1 per cent of the market share of all pharmaceutical products in India have by and large no role to play in the management of the illness. A survey conducted by the Medico Friend Circle has found that only 13 of the 51 commercial anti-diarrhoeals were found to be useful. The rest either contained drugs of doubtful value (such as kaolin, pectin), or were highly toxic or not indicated in diarrhoea (such as streptomycin). Even the useful 13 were only necessary either when the illness was chronic or when the pathogen causing the disease had been established.
