For All Seasons? NO aspect of the economic scene concerns the common man more than the behaviour of prices as they affect the daily life of every citizen. The behaviour of commodity prices has, of late, been causing considerable concern. On July 20, the wholesale price index for 'all commodities' touched a new all-time high of 362.3, showing an increase of 52 per cent over the March-end figure Based on the rise since the beginning of the current fiscal year, the annual rate of inflation works out to over 15 per cent which, of course, suffers from the usual flaw in such statistical exercises. Rising for the fourth successive month, the all-India consumer price index number for industrial workers reached a record high of 606 in June, a rise of 3.4 per cent over the March figure of 586. The Economic Times retail price index for Greater Bombay for July shows an increase of 9.4 per cent over the 12-month period.
