Ministerial Cotton-Picking THE Union Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, Buta Singh, is reported to have made a fervent plea for evolving a national strategy to raise the overall production of cotton from the present level of 77-78 lakh bales to 95 lakh bales by the end of the Seventh Plan. The occasion was the national level meeting on cotton production held in New Delhi on July 15. The meeting was attended by the state agricultural secretaries, agricultural production commissioners, vice-chancellors of agricultural universities, managing directors of state seeds corporations and agricultural scientists. The minister laid special emphasis on production of medium and long staple cottons. He pointed out that it would help narrow down the varietal imabalance if 30 to 40 per cent of the cotton area is covered by certified seeds in the northern states- major producers of short-medium staple cottons
