Deep concern over the decline in oilseeds/ oil prices gives one the impression as if the country has achieved a major breakthrough in oilseeds production and the era of acute vegetable oils shortage is over. Thanks to the impressive increase in mustard/rapeseed production to around 35 lakh tonnes due to certain special factors and record production of cottonseed and soyabean, oilseeds production in 1984-85 (excluding cottonseed) is expected to exceed the Sixth Plan target of 130 lakh tonnes by about five lakh tonnes. This is not saying very much really. For even on the basis of the Seventh Plan target of 170 lakh tonnes of oilseeds, the per capita availability of edible oils will work out 6.75 kg a year which is substantially below the minimum nutritional requirements.
