It comes as no surprise that almost all individual shareholders came from urban areas and from urban occupations. The share of farmers in individual shareholdings in all the companies in the sample was just 7.5 per cent and this figure too was boosted by the efforts of promoters of joint sector units in the fertiliser industry to encourage farmers to purchase shares in these units. The IDBI study feels that the "message of industrial securities" can be spread in rural and semi-urban areas "by encouraging and building a good network of sub-brokers who command good standing in their respective areas and would, therefore, be the right persons to convince rural investors about the benefits of corporate securities". However, the study is not unaware of the dangers of such efforts as is seen from its warning that "while cultivating investors from rural and semi- rural areas adequate caution needs to be exercised and such investors should be encouraged to go in for only safe and profitable corporate securities ...".
