0.36 million tonnes as free sale and 0.31 million tonnes as levy sale has been ordered. The ISMA advertisements mention that as much as 75 per cent of the free sale quota of this sugar year had been already released in the first half, i e, by March end. The demand for free sale sugar is bound to rise during the festival season, August-November. Some more quantities of sugar would need to be imported, in addition to the one million tonnes already contracted for, to ease the supply situation. In 1980-81, however, sizeable imports did not dampen the price because they were mostly cornered by bulk consumers, who are probably speculators too.
