Caste and Communal Violence Fight for a Dwindling Cake THE caste-cum-communal riots in Ahmedabad and some other cities in Gujarat and the recent clashes in Bihar's Shahebganj district, in which 15 Adivasis, including Fr Anthony Murmu, a former Janata MP, were killed by the police were events taking place in locales separated by over a thousand miles. They were, however, closely inter-related socio-politically, rooted as they were in conflicts and hostilities among segments of India's plural society, in which the police played a grossly partisan and oppressive role, taking as they do the side of the socio- politically dominant sections of the population.
