NEXT to nothing is as yet known about the identity or the motives of those responsible for the abduction and tragic killing of Ravindra Mhatre, the relatively junior Indian diplomat in Birmingham, UK, last week. This has not stopped G K Moopannar, one of the general secretaries of the Congress(I), from confidently asserting that the murder was the "evil fruit" of the Jammu and Kashmir government's policy of "befriending communal and secessionist elements'. This is in keeping with the entire campaign 'being waged by the Congress(I) against the National Conference and Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah: it is.. considered altogether superfluous to provide any evidence in support of even the most vicious charges of anti-national conduct levelled against them. On a purely speculative plane, it is indeed very much more plausible to suggest that Mhatre's killing was a terrorist response to the large-scale arrests of alleged anti-national and secessionist elements made by the Jammu and Kashmir government in the last one month or so under pressure from the Government of India.
