Much Ado about Very Little THE USSR has, of late; emerged as the largest buyer of mill-made cotton piecegoods from India, its share of the total exports during 1983-84 working out to 53 per cent in terms of value and 47 per cent in terms of quantity. The share would have been still higher if it had made full purchases (200 million metres) provided for under the 1983 trade plan between the two countries. But the quantity booked was 146.6 million metres and actual shipments totalled 145 million metres. According to the latest reports, shipments of cotton piecegoods to Russia in 1984 are likely to show an improvement over the previous year's performance but these will still fall short of the 200 million metres indicated in the annual plan.
