energy at a cost of between one and two cents per kilowatt hour whereas the cost of nuclear power is 10 to 12 cents and of coal-based power 5 to 7 cents. In India too the scope for efficiency measures to achieve economic use of power should be vast indeed. Of course, here the maximum immediate gain could accrue from the marginal investments necessary to improve the operating efficiency of power plants from the present 40-45 per cent of rated capacity to close to the 60 per cent achieved elsewhere in the world.
