4,220 km of track could be renewed at a cost of Rs 397 crore. Taking into account the likely progress in the last two years, the railways are not likely to renew more than 9,100 kms of track in the Sixth Plan. The backlog of track due for renewal will thus increase to 19,948 kms by the end of the Sixth Plan.
