THE latest available results of the An-nual Survey of Industries (AS I) 1979-1980 covering the entire registered factory sector, carried out by the Government of India, bear out the uni-que position of Maharashtra in the in-dustrial scene of India. The State ac-counted for nearly a sixth of productive capital as well as of employment and nearly a fourth of gross value of output and value added by manufacture by the organised industrial sector in the coun-try.
