WHEN Pravara Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana started in 1949 as the first co-operative sugar factory, few expected it to be the beginning of a veritable revolu-tion in the countryside. Today the co-operative sugar industry in Maharashtra had grown beyond the confines of the sugar industry and stepped out into other industries as well as welfare activities, covering not only their members but also surrounding villages.
