non-optimally. Having said that, there are two directions the subject could take. One is based on the presumption that the subject requires more mathematics, not less: the trouble is that mathematics is not developed enough to provide economics with the necessary tools, but once these tools are provided the economics profession will be able to give precise answers to real world questions. The other direction is marked by an acknowledgement that reality is not amenable to mathematical techniques and that the economist can at best be a systematic observer of social reality. But 'empirical work has so little prestige within the profession.
