Tale of Woe FIGURES compiled by the Association of Indian Engineering Industry (AIEI) show that the engineering industry, which accounts for a weight of 34 per cent in the index of industrial production, recorded a negative growth of 0.5 per cent in 1982-83 over the previous year. The engineering industry thus made a major contribution to the decline in the overall industrial growth rate to 3.7 per cent in 1982-83. The DGTD units surveyed by AIEI represent 83,5 per cent of the weight assigned to the engineering industry in the industrial production index.
