The Polish government did not expect the Pope's visit to establish its claims of 'normalisation', but it did hope that the visit would help to achieve the pacification of society. Official spokesmen for the regime have repeatedly emphasised that the Pope's visit would ' 'contribute to the strengthening of state-church ties" and observed that the Pope being a "wise man" would "say things to calm the people down". More explicitly, it had been mentioned that the church stood to benefit from co-operation with the state. At a meeting between the Pope with Jaruzelski which was broadcast, the latter reminded the Pope of what the Pope himself had said during his last visit to Poland in 1979
