Structural Deficiencies THE solvent extraction industry is in deep trouble and there is little hope of an early end to its difficulties which, in fact, might well increase with time. Thus is mainly because the expansion of capacity has been totally unrelated to the demand for the industry's products. Interestingly enough, it is the old well-established units which are in real trouble. It is not that they are outdated and less efficient. The viability of their operations has been badly affected by the unequal competition they have to face from the new units which enjoy huge tax concessions and other benefits.
