Technological Nub THE Indian machine tools industry, which in the seventies grew in terms of both value of output and range of machine tools produced, is at the crossroads today. From just Rs 5.86 crore in 1960 the industry's turnover increased to Rs 37.2 crore in 1970, and to Rs 300 crore in 1982. Thus even after making allowance for inflation, growth in output of machine tools over these years has been significant. There are at present 150 units in the public and private sectors registered with the DGTD. Moreover, letters of intent/licences have been issued for producing machine tools worth Rs 72 crore per annum. There is also a small-scale unorg-mised sector producing machine tools which accounts for Rs 40 to Rs 50 crore of production per annum.
