The Simpletons Romesh Thapar THE trouble with having simplistic characters in politics is that they are unable to understand the critical differences between a communal clash and an ethnic collision (as in Assam), or minority sensitivities against a majority that is regionally uncertain and suspicious (as in Punjab). We are asked by these simpletons to treat every explosion under the general heading, 'communal'.
