Waiting for a Political Culture

AS if there was nothing else to do, our ruling family is now engaged in a massive interference with the national press. It started with the rather vulnerable Ramnath Goenka 'de-politicising' The Indian Express chain through the much respected George Verghese and getting rid of A run Shourie and his investigations. Now, Khushwant Singh has been told by the embarrassed K K Birla that he must go when his term expires in The Hindustan Times; obviously, it is nut loyalty but subservience that is sought, And the rumours are flying. The Jains of the The Times of India chain were apparently also under pressure to get bold of M J Akbar from The Telegraph in Calcutta rather than extend Girilal Jain's term; in fact, the plan was to propel this senior editor towards The Hindustan Times. By the time these manoeuvrings are over, the national dailies arc expected to .succumb to our ruling family, press bills notwithstanding.
