As in the taxonomies of natural history, which are often considered revisable, the problem partly consists in how you define 'socialist'. This year's Conference at Blackpool marks a new turning point in a debate with which connoisseurs of the British Left arc familiar. To twist a phrase that Gramsci took from Romain Holland we now have optimism of the mouth combined with pessimism over the Foot.
