Though the stage appears crowded, with 25 candidates in the field, the contest, if it can be called so considering the present position of the ruling AIADMK in the state, is going to be mainly between the Congress(I), the ADMK and the DMK, with the Janata party and the CPT(M) candidates registering their presence, as it were. On balance, the candidate of the ruling party in the state appears to have a good chance of winning the election, but who is going to be the winner and who the loser in the longer term appears less certain, though each of the three main contestants) has not been lacking in an uncanny political deviousness.
