Indo-US Relations-Agreeing to Agree

Television THE introduction of colour television is a fait accompli, and the way this took place surely has lessons for policy makers. On one side, the Electronics Commission decided to promote the the manufacture of black and white TV sets by permitting Bharat Electronics (BEL) to make glass shells at a new plant to he sited near Bombay. This would complement BEL's TV tube- making activity, and be an important step in completely indigenising black and white TV set manufacture as virtually all the other components are now made here. Ranged against this choice have been Vasant Sathe, Minister for information and Broadcasting, and a variety of electronic companies who have been importing and assembling kits for colour TV sets. "Nature is in colour'', Sathe is reported to have said as the clinching argument for introducing colour television.
