Banking- Priority Sector Catch-All

August 7, 1982 BANKING activity was on a low key in 1981-82. Aggregate deposits increased by Rs 5,832 crore or by 15.4 per cent compared to Rs 6,229 crore or 19.6 per cent in 1980-8 L Non-food bank credit increased by Rs 3,906 crore or 16.5 per cent, compared to Rs 4,175 crore or 21.5 per cent in 1980-81. In the first quarter of the current financial year (upto July 2) the trends have been even more depressing. Aggregate deposits increased by only Rs 1,709 crore or by 3.9 per cent in this quarter compared to Rs 2,574 crore or 6.8 per cent in the corresponding period 1981-82; non-food credit expansion was a mere Rs 20 crore compared to Rs 1,119 crore in the corresponding period of 1981-82.
