Imphal-Ukhrul road by forces yet unidentified, but suspected to be of the Naga National Socialist Council, in which 21 armed personnel, including a major, of the Sikh Regiment, were lulled on the spot, has once again highlighted the peculiar problems of the insurgency and its control in the northeast. The whole ambush appears to have been carefully planned. Traffic, normally heavy on the Imphal-Ukhrul road, was at the time of the ambush very light; reports suggest that the insurgents' warning to civilian traffic to keep off the road was heeded, without, however, the substance and import of the warning reaching army intelligence. The advance convoy too did not detect the detonators
