The Taiwan experience is a small reminder to Deng that his tactics of no contact with the 'hegemonists' and all trust in the 'retreating power', i e, the US, do not work. They will not work. Purely from a power perspective, it is unrealistic to assume that a retreating superpower will be more kind to a third world state than an advancing superpower would be. China is a developing state, a part of the third world. Why would any superpower exploit it less than the other?
