THE announcement by Sheikh Aluullah that his son, Farooq Abdullah, at present Member of Parliament from Srinagar, would succeed him is certainly an unusual development. This is the first time that the hereditary principle has been successfully blended with the principle of democratic election in the choice of a political party's leader. The development however makes sense in the immediate context of what was obviously an inspired report from Delhi some days ago according to which Sheikh Abdullah was expected to join the Central cabinet in a 'key position' and in the context of the longstanding problems that Sheikh Abdullah has been having with the Centre and, more recently, with the Congress (I).
