SOUTH ASIA, over the past few months, has become one of the focal points of superpower operations. Ostensibly concerned with the future of unhappy Afghanistan, the influential Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister Firyubin was on a critical assessment visit to Islamabad evenas someone in Washington dispatched the tough-talking Jeane Kirkpatrick, US representative in the United Nations, to tell fndira Gandhi that the US does not care a hoot about what other people think of its actions, and that if she wants armaments to counter Pakistan she had better ask for them.
