to achieve a record production of jute goods in 1980. At 13,83 lakh tonnes, it represented a 21 per cent increase over the production of 11.50 lakh tonnes in 1970. There was an improvement in the production of all categories of jute goods, except carpet- backing, during this period. The decline in the production of carpet-backing cloth was attributed to a dump in export demand owing to a recession in the tufted carpet industry in the US and other Western countries. The industry employed , the manufacturing capacity for carpet-backing (which had been rendered idle) for the production of hessian and sacking. These items being heavier in weight, the volume of production in terms of weight registered an inpressive increase.
