In the Standard Vacuum case, he recognised the extent to which the social philosophy of the age supplied the background to industrial adjudication and held that the theory of 'hire and fire' cannot hold the field. Similarly, in the Diwan Badri Das case he held that the freedom of contract had to yield to the higher interests of social justice like the guarantee of security of tenure. Ga- jendragadkar's most enduring contribution in this area could well be his work as Chairman of the National Commission of Labour, over which ho presided after his retirement.
