THE Home Minister's announcement in Parliament of the discovery of an alleged attempt to sabotage the Air India Boeing, Makalu, scheduled to be used by the Prime Minister on her coming visit to West Asia and Switzerland, is truly astonishing. If indeed Makalu's cables had been damaged, the matter is serious and should have been dealt with with far greater circums pection and thoroughness than has been the case till now. To entrust the investigation of the alleged attempt at sabotage to the CBI and simultaneously make an announcement in Parliament even before the CBI has been able to establish, first, whether there was indeed an attempt at sabotage and, secondly, whether the Prime Minister was the intended object of the attempt, suggests that the Home Minister was interested more in creating a sensation than in ascertaining the actual facts about the alleged attempt.
