tonnes compared to 40.8 lakh tonnes in 1978-79, showing a decline of 15.7 per cent as against the fall of 27.4 per cent in rice output. In the case of wheat, the decline in market arrivals in 515 selected markets was nominal, from 32.3 lakh tonnes to 31.4 lakh tonnes, or by 2.8 per cent compared to the over 11 per cent decline in production. Of course, it is not possible to draw any definite conclusions from these data, but it is very likely that the drought and the consequent damage to crop affected the larger farmers, those with the most marketable surpluses, relatively less.
