A stage might be reached when even if the Central leadership realises that enough weakening of the organisation has already been achieved and it is time to once again swing a bit the other way and strengthen existing and well-tested loyalists, it might not be able to stem the impetus for change. In other words, the transformation of the Congress party, an aim consciously pursued by Indira Gandhi and her coterie for the past ten years and more, having been achieved, might logically lead to its disintegration as well. It is to be seen how far those elements who have been backing the political leadership of Indira Gandhi and thus have a vested interest in the continued health and vitality
