Varieties of Alienation IN the context of the present agitation against 'foreign nationals' in Assam and in other regions of the northeast, the 1971 Census data on languages provides some interesting insights (C-VI Social and Cultural Tables, Census of India, 1971, Part II-C (iii), Volume I, 1979). This note is confined to the data on Assam. It has to be borne in mind that at the time of the 1971 Census, the present Union territory of Mizoram was part of the state of Assam.
