However, since maintenance of law and order in states is the responsibility of the respective state governments and since such para-military forces are increasingly used for internal security purposes, it would have been more appropriate to augment the police forces of the states concerned. But this appears unlikely in view of the wide support the current movements in the north-east are reputed to have in the local administrations, including the local police, Rather, what is more likely is that the additional battlions of these para-military forces may be deployed more and more to meet the internal problems of the country and, in the north-east, to control the present agitation itself.
