The results show that on the whole the working class and the rural poor voted the CPI (M) and the Left alliance on a massive scale. There was a sharper polarisation among the urban petty bourgeoisie, with an increased mobilisation by the Congress (I), The rural rich almost solidly voted the Congress (I), cutting across party loyalties.
