Social Science Research and Public Policy

Social Science Research and Public Policy I WELCOME corrections and additions to my article, "Social Science Research and Public Policy in India'' (September 15 and 22, 1979). I visited a large number of research institutions and interviewed numerous social scientists and government officials in a dozen cities and I would not be surprised if errors appeared in my article. In any event the primary purpose of my article was not to report in detail the history, funding and research activities of India's many social science research centres, but to consider what kind of policy-oriented social science research is conducted, how it is disseminated, and how it is used by those who make and implement public policy. My very brief comments on the Centre for Development Studies in Trivandrum were intended to in- dicate the contribution which that institution has made in Kerala. P G K Panikar, I S Gulati, K N Raj and A Vaidyanathan (December 15, 1979) appear to believe that I have not done justice to the Centre and if I have made any errors I am pleased to have them corrected.
