EAST TIMOR The Forgotten People EAST TIMOR was a Portuguese colony for more than 450 years. In 1974, when colonial rule was on its last legs, the average life span of the Timores was 33 years and only 5 per ctiu of them were literate. No political activity was allowed. The end of Colonial rule in East Timor, was further complicated by the fact that Indonesia claimed East Timor to be historically a part of its territory.
