The index for all commodities for December 1978 stood at 184.8 (base 1970-71 = 100) and in fact showed a slight fall of 0.4 per cent over December 1977. The overall position is not substantially altered even if, instead of a point-to-point comparison, the average of the monthly index numbers for 1978 is compared with that for 1977. A closer look at the index numbers, however, brings out some significant, and not altogether reassuring, aspects of the price situation.
