Electronics-Closer to Trade than Manufacture

Electronics THE progress of the electronic calculator industry illustrates how the cosmetics of industrial policy can cover a range of activities with closer relation to trade than manufacture. With few exceptions, the calculator manufacturers are no more than importers of calculators in what, in other contexts, is called 'completely knocked down condition', and this fact alone explains hew this industry has been able to keep abreast of the 'latest trends'. To help the manufacturers in this direction and, presumably, to build up a market, intriguing advertisements have been appearing in the newspapers for ranges of Japanese calculators as also for watches. In many ways, (he calculator industry is in the same state as the private sector watch industry after the government introduced its liberal import policy.
