Traders Agitation- More Clout for Big Fish

Assam WHILE the agitation against the inclusion of 'aliens' in the voters' lists in Assam, and its inevitable transformation into an agitation against 'outsiders' lias attracted widespread attention, including a call for Central intervention by the West Bengal chief minister, certain developments in Meghalaya more or less corresponding to the events in Assam have received less notice. All the affected persons have been Bengalis; indeed, the incidents were 'provoked' by a minor altercation between some Khasi youths and Bengalis during Kali Puja on October 22, culminating in widespread and apparently well-co-ordinated attacks on Bengalis and their properties beginning on October 25, leading to the army being called out and orders to 'shoot at sight1 being issued in Shillong.
