Disenchantment with Politicians Romesh Thapar ONE does not have to go far to assess the popular disenchantment with politicians. Any unit of the Election Commission will confirm that there is widespread apathy about getting registered on the rolls, particularly in the urban areas. The unprincipled practices of the politicians, the apparently unassailable positions of the old and decrepit who dominate all the parties, and the irresponsible performance of the younger incumbents has created a feeling of hopelessness. India has built the economic muscle to push ahead dramatically, but is unable to forge the political sanctions to do the pushing, to break the many vicious vested interests which Have hidden behind our 'socialistic' aims, growing to enormous proportions through the years
