forces have urged the government to create posts of six more generals in the army, three more air marshalls in the air force and three more admirals in the navy. This has been done as part of proposals to overhaul the rank structure in the armed forces so as to improve career prospects at all levels. The government had, it will be recalled, only in July announced the creation of 1,200 additional posts of lieutenant- colonels and wing commanders to improve promotion opportunities for majors in the army and squadron-leaders in the air force. The service chiefs have apparently found this inadequate.
