Leadership Contests Romesh Thapar EVEN if much is not being written about the summoning of the army to bring the striking policemen and security formations under control, the politicians of the Janata party are fast convincing themselves that a new leadership based on a more meaningful alignment of forces is urgently needed. Chandra Sekhar, the cautious president of the party, is becoming very vocal in his criticism of the PM's static role. Bahuguna is rallying his Congressmen with an eye on the mobilisation by Devaraj Urs, George Fernandes, still active in collaboration Madhu Limaye, is raising his old dernands on the Janata party leadership. AH of them, except for Morarji Desai, anconscious that Charan Singh may well precipitate a .sudden crisis now that he removal of Devi Lal has lost him control of strategic Haryana from where he could pressurise, threaten and cajole the Government of India.
