ASSAM-Occupation of a Tea Estate

'Occupation' of a Tea Estate Udayon Misra SOCKLATING TEA ESTATE, situated about twenty kilometres from Jorhat, was the scone of some violent incidents on April 9 in which 11 persons died. The clash between the workers of the tea garden and an occupation force of about 150 men led by an Assamese businessman has led to much understandable outrage and calls for 'severe action' against the culprits. The common version of the clash is that the workers had been instigated by the former owner to prevent the local businessman from occupying the garden. Certain local chauvinist forces go one step further and argue that it is part of an organised assault by 'foreign' capi- alists against rising Assamese capita- nsm.
